I hope you don't mind but I am posting this here on behalf of one of our other coordinators who is about to buy a new computer. I know there are lots of clever people on this site. "I'm having a new computer built. The Owner where I'm having it built, suggests I get a Blueray DVD burner, instead of the old format. He says that Blueray is the way it's going, the old format will disappear eventually. He says it is terrific, could make movies etc. I'm not into that kind of thing. I rarely watch movies or TV. He says the DVD would hold 6 or 9 cd's. I forget exactly. I'm wondering if I should go for it or stick to the old kind. Thanks for any opinion offered."

Bluray is the way things are going for sure... the current disc capacity is way beyond a standard DVD. Not only does it allow for better storage, but also improved sound and video ability. Pretty soon Bluray drives will be standard on new computers...

Yes I think BlueRay is overtaking HD DVD in the new format wars. BlueRay discs have double the capacity of HD which makes possible games with more detail and content, and more video footage. A BlueRay disc has about twice the capacity of a HD one.

Precisely, but it was more like "Blue Ray killed HD DVD". It is hard to find a HD DVD player any more here in the US. I remember back when the craze was the new 3 1/2 floppy that would hold 640K. Totally wiped out 5 1/4. Point is I seriously wonder "what is next" ?

I think Blu Ray will remain for some time... it is still gaining mainstream acceptance and as more and more movies come out I think you will see a great deal of growth. We are one of those households who has to have the newest tech toys and as such we bought both HD DVD and Bluray players when they came out. Needless to say, within a couple days the HD DVD player went back. We love our Blu-Ray!

Yes the music & movie stores here were selling BRay and HD side by side in about equal numbers up to last Christmas. Now HD movies are severely outnumbered by BRay on the shelves. No doubt the Playstation 3 machines provide a ready made playback machine and this is a big factor in BRay coming out tops.

The other big factor was the studio support was higher for BluRay than for HD DVD. The nail in the coffin occurred when stores like Target, Blockbuster, and such chose to carry only the BluRay.

Yes that's very true. To be honest, at first I half expected HD to win simply because the name sounded right (BlueRay sounds odd I think), but I'm glad it's BR simply because the huge storage capacity makes it a common sense thing.

Yes that's a good point Jim. I was in my local Virgin (now called Zavvi) music store today and seen that they have got rid of all the HD movies and have double the selection of BlueRays instead.

wanna know what I find really funny? People keep saying that downloads are the way that the industry is headed, and that no one will want the physical discs anymore. I think that is bull. Until our country has an infastructure that makes broadband avaialble to EVERYONE, there will still be people who want the discs. Like me, for example. We cannot get broadband through either our phone or cable companies, so we were forced to go the satellite route to get "high speed". We love the speed, but the price is a little high AND we have a download cap - 500MB per 24 hr period. Barely enough to download one TV episode, let alone a movie... and that's assuming we don't download or do ANYTHING else for the rest of the day. Ok, I'm done now...

We are through HughesNet right now... We pay $80 a month, which is really higher then I wanted but due to all the work I do online I needed more speed then our HORRIBLE dial up was giving us...

I was in the high 60's a month but that was 12-15 years ago. Starband didn't have any restrictions and I even ran a small server. Big rip was the equipment, almost 600 bucks to get it going.

I used Hughes for about 2 years, and fought them almost daily. The speeds were terrible and if someone walked by my house and sneezed, I would lose sat. signal. We have since switched to Verizon Wireless Internet, and LOVE it. The speeds are 3 times faster than Hughes ever was, and the upload speeds are great. We have unlimited bandwidth, which means not getting fapped every day. Its not as good as Cable, of course, but 100 times better than Hughes could ever imagine to be. I pay $60 a month, which is more than I care to pay, but living in the county doesn't leave much option.
