I have set permissions for Guests not to be able to view topics but only to see the front page with all it's sections. Now this works in all cases except when there is a Guest post in a topic and then unregistered members can access that post and the rest of the topic. An example is the Welcome to your model railway section. If a non registered member clicks on this then he goes to a separate page and is able to access the 'New boy on the block' topic and all it's posts.

I don't know if this is a failure or something to do with the phpbb conversion.

Robert, I looked at your site and as a guest I could access lots of forums where a guest had posted.

We don't allow guest posting on our forums, so no problem.

Those aren't guests in the true sense of the word. The posts on the forum which show as being made by guests are in fact previous members who for one reason or another have left the forum. Their posts then show as Guests. It looks like I will have to trawl the forum and delete those posts and adjust others so that the topic still makes sense.

I can see the topic titles in the popular tab which isn't right but can't seem to access anything. Did you change something in permissions since your post? Does anyone have specific links where you can see the actual posts?

I just checked another popular forum well 2 actually with permissions set for no viewing for guests. I could not see anything on any of them.

There are layout problems on your front page I cannot help you with now because the code is so altered. When the upgrade happens you will loose all of that I have to warn you.

There was an early bug from WowBB that guests could post on topics that any guest had posted on but it was cured early in the game.

I can look at your permissions only as an admin to see if things were set right but if you have altered any of the PHP code there may be no setting that works. I hope that is not the case because my only option would be to replace the original code.

This is why we have all the seemingly silly rules about not supporting mods at all and themes by un authorized entities. You wouldn't believe how many hours were spent back in the Wow days tracking down what the customer perceived as "bugs" but in reality were quirks in the program caused by a large rash of people changing things in the code or offering mods because they had done a couple things that seemed to work.

Hi Jim,

Bob has changed the permissions since earlier. Earlier while logged out I could see posts which I should not have been able to see, because he had viewing turned off for guests.

e.g. this one.

http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=714&forum_id=29

See attached. I could see this earlier while logged out, even though there was no permission for guests to view topics.

The entire forum is paranoid about their stuff being seen by non-members. I don't understand why but I assume they have good reasons. Bob has now turned the entire board off for Guest visitors.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Jim,

The layout problem is only for Guests -- I'm working on it now. The layout is fine for logged-in members, though it's not yet finished. It's also fine if Bob would allow Guests to view the forum but not the topics, as he was doing earlier.

There have been no changes to the php files, only to the templates. It's all backed up and changes recorded and undo-able if necessary.

regards,

Martin.

I have got the "View All" box ticked in Permissions for Guests and that should hold them to the front page only. I don't see another alternative there.

Hi Bob,

You have changed it since earlier. It is now possible to read this post while logged out, even though Guests do not have permission to read posts:

http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=714&forum_id=29

Jim -- can you clarify the distinction between unregistered visitors and registered members who have logged out? Both show as Guests, but I know there is a difference because of the cookie. I see a different result on the forums after deleting the cookie.

regards,

Martin.

Perhaps it is something to do with this bug that Jim mentioned and the phpbb conversion because that's exactly what's happening. Perhaps the cure didn't carry over.

"There was an early bug from WowBB that guests could post on topics that any guest had posted on but it was cured early in the game."

I am of course clutching at straws here.

Would it be possible to change the name that replaces the names of deleted members from Guest to something else? Perhaps that would fix it.

I need to take a look at the permissions Bob, something doesn't seem quite right. Could you PM me a temporary admin log in?
