I was attempting to get the video link to work, when  I noticed that the videos will not play.  Is there a plugin that I need on the server.

Thanks

Hi Nick,

What videos are you attempting to play? are you using the flash, windows media player, etc.?

I tried Windows Media Player. I placed a simple video, about 6.0 mb in size on my site and placed the link in the pop-up box. The media player shows up in the post, but I can't get the video to play.

I just set the boards up, and I am trying everything out to work out any bugs for my members.

Thanks
Nick

If it's any conciliation, I've managed to get one WMP video to work correctly but that was with using IE (which I despise). I've tried several various ones and just that one has worked. I haven't been able to get any quicktime, realplayer, or flash to work in IE or Firefox.

when i tried to use the windows media player button with Nick's link, it gave me a message at the top (i have the google pop up blocker turned on) telling me that i need to install the windows media 6.4 player shim in order for the video to work.

apparently i have an older version of windows media player installed (version 9) and something wasnt compatible with v9. so i ran the wmp 6.4 shim and the video started working.

what version of wmp are you using?

"help me help you" kinda thing Di? :)

It has been apparent that most--even myself--have basically said "doesn't work" but few have done any testing to give more information so...

There are very few video's on the net now-a-days in WMV, WMP, QT, and even RP. I'm sure there are more than I think but it's coming to a close due to everyone posting on YouTube and the like. As far as the WMV stuff, I can get any of them to work, run/play but they all loose their control panel (volume, forward, backward, pause, etc) in Firefox. All the controls remain when in IE.

I have not tried the QT or RP stuff as I'm lead to believe these are becoming almost obsolete for the most part. Again, there are probably a lot more out there than I'm aware of but I do not cross them through my personal daily internet travels.

I'm taking a guess here but I'd say that 80% of todays latest video's are FLV/flash or some off the wall player/format. Most of the video's I personally would like most embed in a post or thread are flash (Youtube and the like).

Sadly enough, I can't get any flash video's to show regardless of the code or things tried.

I apologize if I have offended in some way with my previous post(?)

I rarely post videos so it was a learning curve for me to figure out how to post a video when one of our customers asked the question "how do you post a video".

I always ask for a link to try it on my test board before i can say "hey, this is how its done"

So I wasnt trying to be facetious in my previous post. I really was trying to be helpful.

If you would like to send me a link to a video you want to upload, I would be more than happy to try and figure it out for you.

Di

I was trying to add a flash video (more than once) also tried the windows media player and it didn't work either. I don't have a specific link to a pic off hand right now. I would just try to add anything and see whatcha get. I am dumbfounded and had given up on it. I get the box but won't play and sometimes won't show. If ya come up with a fix that would be great!!!

Basically here is the deal. There is nothing wrong with the software's ability to play videos, we have proven that and have given precise directions on how to do it INCLUDING what to do if your computer isn't set up to play them. Follow the directions and they will play.

also, if you have a pop up blocker like google's popup blocker and you havent set the permission to allow popups for your board, when you click the "f" button or the wmp button, read the warning message the popup blocker gives you. mine asks to temporarily allow the popup so that i can insert the url after i click either of those buttons.

Does everyone see the video in the post 2 posts up?

If no then you have something wrong with your browser settings or firewall settings that do not permit it being shown.

If you do see it then you surely can post one also if you follow these directions which applies to flash AND you tube:

Oh dear............naw, Not even just "naw" but "hellnaw!" you haven't offended anyone. I was merely saying--or trying to say--that most people (sometimes even myself) will go to use something, anything........and if it doesn't work, we scream "it doesn't work!" as oppose to trying to find out why. Sometimes it just takes replacing the batteries or simply pluggin it in. :)

As I stated in "private support", I'm sure it's something dealing with my personal settings on my PC. These settings just happen to be effecting both Firefox and IE behaviors. I do not feel that it is a WowUltra problem. What I'm working on finding out is what little setting is in place or not in place on my PC that effects both Firefox and IE and keeps me from displaying the video's as they should. These matters seem to always be "one click" away from resolve. Once I find my culprit, I'll share it in hopes that others will find a fix as well. :)

Yes sir I do see the video above and I'm sure there are others that can see it as well but still cannot post one on there board.

Through further testing and with help from a fellow admin on my board, this is where I'm at on this at the moment:

As I've said before, I cannot post "flash" in IE or Firefox.

Both have completely different settings and neither one setting can effect the other. They are two separate/different entities.

My fellow admin buddy has very limited computer experience and is totally unaware of all the security stuff. His comp is pretty much as it was the day he bought it new and he's using IE (bless his heart). Nothing worked for him although WMV works for me (upload/posting). I can view ANYTHING regardless of format or player (I have them all) but cannot post anything except WMV on my board. He couldn't even post WMV from his comp to where it is viewable for me to see.

I do receive a message though: "additional plugins required". The kicker is.......everything I have on my comp and my wifes comp is up to date and there are no other plugin's available. I receive similar messages in both IE and Firefox.

I simply find it hard to believe that there are "X" amount of people having trouble with this to believe it's our individual computer settings or a firewall. I can turn off every firewall I have and the problem still remains.........yet no matter what changes I make, I can still view the video that Di put up with no problem.

I'm still hunting though. :)

Sadly enough, it isn't specific as to the actual plug-ins required. Real Player and Quicktime seem to be reversed? But there again.........hang on a bit. My counter part may have tried the same YouTube "flash" video in every format...........which doesn't help much with the exception that not even he couldn't post "flash" from YouTube.

And yes dear, I am all too familiar with tenaciousness. Along with several other qualifications, I'm also an engineer and when I have an idea, I'm bound and determined to "make it work" regardless of all the "why it wont's or shouldn't's.
