I am wondering if it can be explained why Ishould consider leaving Start Logic. I am already paid until January '09, but there is no reason not to research this now.

Is there any benefits to switching? Cost is not the hugest issue to me. I care more about service, speed, good controls etc.

I also built a site for a local company, that I am hosting through Host Monster

I look forward to this research, and response.

Cheers

Eric

Our hosting was built learning from bad experiences with other companies, one of them very large. We use only Linux systems, the PHP, Apache and MySQL are custom tailored to fit the hardware and the particular hosting situation. On our shared servers we use c-panel 11 and on single client dedicated servers we use Zervex DSM. We are not resellers, we lease entire servers.

And you can read on this board about the service we provide. Is there anything specific you need to know?

Can you give me an idea how user friendly the Control Panel is?

well from my standpoint, all the times Jim and I have run our own boards and what nots, i have never gone into our C-Panel until we decided to go into hosting.

It was a cinch for me to pick up :)

Cpanel has a demo here:
http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpwhm/try_cp_whm.htm

HOWEVER I'm using the X theme instead of the X3 theme simply because I had branding for the panel way before X3 was released. I will work up some X3 branding eventually but X works just fine and is low on the priority list.

Here is the top half of ours:

Well, OK

Back to my original question......

And feel free to answer privately if that is better. I have Start Logic and Host Monster now, is there any good reason to switch?

well natfam if you will i can offer mine own opinion.

if you don't already have a reason then you probably don't need to switch, why fix what isn't broken? if you're happy with what you have stay with it, if it ever comes to the point that you begin to get unhappy then you'll have reasons.

hosts are hosts at a base line level, if one's site isn't demanding much from even a crappy host, then there likely won't be any issues or reasons. and then it go forward from there.

there is a member here who has over ten thousand members to his forum and averages between 100 to 150 active members at any given moment through out the day. i would bet a whole lot of money if he were at start logic he'd either already be paying through the nose for a dedicated server or his forum would be slower than molasses.

many hosts promise tons of space and bandwidth which they overstate but even if you use it, they then will throttle down the cpu usage , meaning that a php based forum that uses a lot of processing power because people are constantly requesting and posting pages, will jam up and hang and take forever to load, essentially making the forum useless. then if you inquire about what is wrong with your site, you'll be given the run around. why? because you likely will be talking to a teenager making 7 bucks an hour who not only doesn't know squat but could care less about you or they're employer.

personally i don't like companies like start logic (they actually were my first web host ever) or yahoo(my 2nd) or go daddy( i learned by then so i've never used them).

but like i said, if you are happy then there is no reason, no enticement or features that alone would make you want to switch.

Hi Eric. Bou summed this up very well. If you are happy at your current host then there is no point in us trying to convince you otherwise. He is also right in that an averae sized forum will happily reside on a server with other similar sized forums, but if one or more of the forums start to get very busy it will draw from the resources that the other forums also share.
My humble forum and site used to regularly (almost daily in the final year) get bogged down on the previous server, ie page load times took ages, timeouts and too many connections errors etc. and I think my forum just outgrew that server. I'd never had those problems when the forum was small and averaging around 25 visitors logged in at the longest session setting. So I had to make the dreaded decision to change, after many months of burying my head in the sand. Jim did it all for me, my fears of disaster were not realized and everything is running perfectly now. The support here is the best I've had in the four years I've had a forum and in the nine years total that I've had a web site running.

You are probably not in a hurry right now Eric, so I'd suggest having a think about it for a while.

Almost forgot to say that CPanel is very easy to use. There are things you can do in there that you can't do in CPanel. Zervex does most everything that CPanel does, but takes a bit more getting used to if you already are used to CPanel.

Thank you both for your input.

I can add that I am neither happy or unhappy with my current provider. Since they are the only one that I have ever been with I really do not know any better.

I know that startlogic does not have (and will not install) iSpell so I do not have the spell check function. I also can not seem to get the embedded video function that WoW offers to work either. I assume that is a server issue as well.

As far as customer service.I have to admit that I have never had as much good service as I have the past few days with Jim and Di. I do not know how they can keep it up though as their client base grows. I do like that start logic has 24/7 support and you can talk to someone, BUT that has not always proved to be any quicker or solved issues any better.

So I guess I am still :?
