Last night we completed the first of what we hope will be many phpBB 2.x conversions. It isn't a patch like the old Wow routine it is a real 100% conversion to the Ultra DB format.

The converter retains 100% of categories, forums, topics, posts, post counts, users, avatars, and smilies.

The things that will not be converted-
old PM's
Polls
Moderator status
Forum permissions
Any "modifications" made to the original board

These routines are so different in phpBB that instead of trying to "hack" them in there with unusual results we opted to convert what was really important accurately and not mess with the rest.

All functions work 100% after that in the Ultra board.

The owner of this board will probably post in the showcase soon but is busy I bet playing with his new software!

Not too busy that I haven't been able to post my appreciation in the Testimonials section Jim. More importantly than me being happy is the fact that my members are happy. Now, back to playing, good fun eh. :)

That's a great achievement Jim, congratulation. I hope we see many people convert over time. All the bits you didn't convert can just be set up again after conversion and the members would be told about losing old PM's so they could copy and save anything important. At the end of the day nothing will be lost.

Hi Jim,

Congratulations on completing this. :)  I'm sure Robert is pleased. Some of his members were very apprehensive about the whole thing.

Can you clarify the position on attachments? What happens to phpBB posts which include attachments, and especially those with multiple attachments per post?

Are they going into the Ultra DB, or a separate folder?

If the latter, is there any news of a similar conversion for existing Ultra boards?

cheers,

Martin.

Pleased is right Martin. The only problems I have had have been so small that even I could deal with them, so that must show you how well it has gone. :)

phpBB before 3.x did not have attachments except for the "attachment mod". So there wasn't anything to convert.

There are problems. With the conversion you did for Your Model Railway board.

Topics imported do not show correct Last Post date. They show first post date instead. Topics imported don't work correctly with "Mark All Forums Read".

Topics created since the import look ok.

Look at http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=2382&forum_id=33

First post in topic is 1st Wed Aug 6th, 2008 03:15 pm

Last post in topic is 7th Thu Aug 7th, 2008 06:35 am

But Last Post in forum view is Wed Aug 6th, 2008 03:15 pm ! :?

===

First it shows New/Unread. Go and read it. Now it shows Read. Ok.

Click "Mark All Forums Read". Now it shows New/Unread again! :?

Many other topics from before the import are the same.

Sounds just like some teething problems, which can be expected.

Yes, it's not a show-stopper.

But it needs to be reported and fixed. Before the flood of phpBB conversions starts! :)

I've looked at several WowUltra boards now. Much better than phpBB!

Interesting, I just looked at that. Then I posted in it and it read the correct info.

Please delete that post and see if it goes back to weird.

I have actually seen this before on regular ultra boards that are converted from older wow boards that were pre version 1.7 on the original. 7 days after the real last post it will stop doing that or if you post in there.

I don't think it was the conversion it's self but some bad math. phpBB uses the unix time stamp for all date/time functions and Ultra uses date/time. The conversion is simple but on topics where threads have been moved or deleted it can get jumbled. Some of the original WowBB users here will remember severe "not read" problems from earlier versions.

So sorry about that, looks like there was some shifting in the "last post ID" fields in the backup from the original board, but that's all I had to work with!

It can be fixed in the converter with some fancy math that compares the last post date in a topic (which has to be assumed correct for this to work) and use that instead of the date of the last post ID in the forum. It was only converting what was there already!

Good observation and thank you.

Robert deleted it.

Now the topic is still working properly. You do good work!

Other topics not. Will they all fix themselves 7 days from now?

I'd be inclined to wait and see. No point in Jim maybe spending time on it just yet if it fixes itself in a week.

i agree with Steve.

my suggestion is for everyone to just post as they normally would in the forums that keep coming up "new posts", during the week. If its still doing it a week from today, then come back and let us know if theres still a problem with it :)
