When I was away, one of the other Admins banned a member.  She  told me that the name was still in the users list.  I deleted it from the banned box ok.

Jim can you explain the purpose of the banned list please, or if it is better just to delete someone and ignore it?

I would have thought that a banned list was there if the member had been banned for a certain length of time and then after that time he could be reinstated. If it's a permanent ban then just delete him/her.

by moving them to the banned group it also stops them from just rejoining with the same username

They would have to be a bit thick to try coming back with the same user name wouldn't they? I suppose they could hope that it wouldn't be picked up.

you are missing the point. It they are automated spammer programs or even manual people joining - they are joining thousands of forums blindly. they just keep joining and could easily forget if they try again months or years later. But if you ban they will already be banned and you just make it harder for them. It is an ongoing battle and every little bit helps.

If you delete them and they have normal non-spam posts, they will show up as being posted by Guest, so it's probably better in that case to ban them. You can also set up another 'Temporarily Suspended Member' usergroup with the same lack of permissions as the banned group for people that you might want to give a chance to. I find once you ban someone it needs to be permanent or you will be making a mockery of the whole thing, so having a suspended group gives you some flexibility.

What do their posts show up as if you ban them?

It'll say "Banned" under their username.

I prefer to use the word "Scumbucket" as the user title to all banned members, but then that is just me
