I've got a member or two that changed their email addy's or have simply forgotten their passwords. I haven't been able to figure out how to reset passwords for members that need it.

Since the passwords are encrypted, the only thing you as an admin can do is go into their profile and change their email address from their old one to their new one. Once you do that, then they would have to click the "forgot username or password" link thats on the login screen. That will send them a new password to their new email address.

Well that leads to yet another problem. Some members still do not receive emails from my board. They didn't receive any confirmation email upon registering and still do no receive emails now. Granted, this is not a WowUltra problem. It's their mail servers eating the mail because it thinks it's spam or what-have-you. I'm still left with no way to reset a members password. Not even to a simple "default" one so I have to have ask the member to register under a new/different name and then add them manually.

It would take a SQL query to reset the password. I try not to hand SQL queries out because one little punctuation mark wrong and you change everyones password instead. PM me with the user name and I'll set it to 1234. Does anyone think this ability should be included in the software? Seems to be requested a lot. It's still encrypted but I have saved the encrypted version of 1234 for emergencies. It is impossible to ever view the actual password after it is set.

Got another one for you guys and it's kind of weird but related to the above. Here a while back one of my members contacted me and told me he couldn't log on. I told him to clear his cookies, cache, double check his password, etc. He still claimed he couldn't log on. I asked for his password so I could "become user" and change his password for him and then he could change it to whatever later on. It still didn't work. He claimed that when he logged in, it never said "logged in" or "login failed" or anything of the sort. It just takes him to the home page but he has no more permissions that an unregistered member. I've been trying to figure that one out on my own but I mainly wrote it off as something on his machine. Tonight, one of my administrators is complaining of the same thing happening to him. He can "login" but he's never "logged in". It's like a channel or process gets skipped or something. Any idea's? Thanks guys........like anything else, we'll get it figured out.

Are they hitting it from the same URL? Did you park a domain recently?

I checked the board cookie settings and they are correct. The only thing we can do at this point is reset the cookie globally meaning everyone would have to log back in. It cures all cookie problems with all users but usually causes havoc with members that don't keep track of their passwords. Let me know-

Go ahead and do so Jim. We'll just have to deal with the effects afterwards. Thanks.

Personally I think it would be a great addition to the software. I do use an sql query to change passwords but cringe everytime I do it..... I get emailed several times a month from members that can't remember their PW Jim wrote:

Question, if Torques members werent getting any confirming emails, would it also relate to my members not getting my mass emails? I talk to many of them offline and personally, and none of them have seen any of my mass emails, so am I sending blanks out?

zzkenoman, I dunno how long you've had your board or domain up and going but it takes time....and material (threads/posts). What happens is a new board or website is created that sends out emails for whatever reason. Email servers with strict scrutiny don't recognize the domain, the website, or it's scripting and deems it "possible spam". 'Google owns' and if your website hasn't been around long enough or has enough material to be worthy of a Google mention, then a lot of email servers will simply see you as "possible spam". The mail server eats the email before most people ever has a chance to see it or have the opportunity to have it automatically placed in their own "trash/junk" folder. Some of your members got the confirmation or mass email but it wound up in the junk folder and they need to check that occasionally. Anyone that signed up on my board and did not receive an email confirmation also cannot receive any mass emails. However, you can better this situation by emailing an individual through your website/board. It may take several attempts but eventually they will get one. Once they get one, they'll get them all. If no one, including the people that received confirmation emails at the time of signing up for your board, is receiving your mass emails, then there may be an error somewhere in the software. If you send out a mass email, do you receive it? If so, it's not a software issue.

FYI, the global resetting didn't fix anything. After obtaining the users password, becoming "him/her" and then reseting their password manually, everything was a "go".

In the name of learning, did the old password have any unusual characters like underscores, brackets, apostrophe, you know? Perhaps we can help others.

No sir, it was the original password given to him when he registered. It's like his password was no longer tied to his username or sommat. *shrugs*

Update: I'm getting several e-mails from members with the exact same problem. They login but they never get "logged in" which means they can't post. Many have even stopped trying and don't even come around anymore. I'm loosing active members here. Help?

I looked deep into your config. I changed the cookie again to something unusual this time and changed your session length to 15 from 3. I have noticed strange results from session lengths less than 5 minutes. Stock ultra install is 5 minutes, the most common setting is 15 and I have seen settings as high as 99 minutes to make it appear as if there are more people on! That's really all we can do from a software standpoint, the cookie routine is tried and proven. We can't help what the cookie or javascript settings are on browsers AND have seen some hosts with unusual cookie settings in their apache conf file.

Thanks Jim, we'll see what happens. Keep the "password reset" addition in mind. I'm sure it's on the list. It'll sure ease a lot of headache. Thanks again.

just to add what i have done in the past as far as resetting a user's password. through cpanel i open phpmyadmin, then locate and browse the user table to my name, i then copy my encrypted password and paste it into the member's password field and save. that changes his password to mine, then i go back to the board and log in as them using my password, go the their account and change the password to something like 12345 and then email them the new password. as for members showing logged out after trying to log in, for sure its a cookie problem on their end, i would bet they have the site blocked. they should go into their browsers option and either clear all cookies or scroll until they find your site and then remove it. the next time they load your site a new cookie will be set. it also explains why you changing your site's cookie didn't help, because any cookie would be blocked. jim, i think an excellent idea that adds "helpfulness" to ultra is that when cookies are blocked and someone trys to log in instead of getting a logged out index page they should get a notice saying "sorry cookies must be enabled", that way its instantly understood that cookies need to be checked.
