UPDATE wowbb_users SET user_password='81dc9bdb52d04dc20036dbd8313ed055' where user_name='username'

That long drawn out MD5 hash is the password 1234. I use this all the time, saves a few steps :)

through cpanel i open phpmyadmin, then locate and browse the user table to my name, i then copy my encrypted password and paste it into the member's password field and save. that changes his password to mine, then i go back to the board and log in as them using my password, go the their account and change the password to something like 12345 and then email them the new password.

as for members showing logged out after trying to log in, for sure its a cookie problem on their end, i would bet they have the site blocked. they should go into their browsers option and either clear all cookies or scroll until they find your site and then remove it. the next time they load your site a new cookie will be set. it also explains why you changing your site's cookie didn't help, because any cookie would be blocked.

jim, i think an excellent idea that adds "helpfulness" to ultra is that when cookies are blocked and someone trys to log in instead of getting a logged out index page they should get a notice saying "sorry cookies must be enabled", that way its instantly understood that cookies need to be checked.

The biggest problem with this is some of these members are "computer dumb" and simply use IE-whatever. They've never blocked a cookie and wouldn't know where to start doing so. A few of the members now with the problem has never logged out and check the site daily.
