This may be a WowBB question, but if everybody's software is based on WowBB, I expect this affects everybody.

I have a fairly large database, although I'm sure there are larger out there, I still pay for a 'small' site.  We've had continuing issues with the search index.  Most recently an error occur ed and the fix meant the index was deleted.  No problem, it can be rebuilt, right?

Apparently not.

The last time it was re-indexed, our techie complained that it took three days because it timed out and had to be restarted, not sure what she meant by that, but I assume it just didn't work in background and when her computer timed out, so did the indexing.

But now I've been trying to get the file re-indexed, I get an error after 15 minutes or so, apparently there's an issue with how it works with the server.  I know some advice was posted on the Wowbb board which can no longer be accessed.  Our new server has no idea what's going on, WowBB is pretty much toast, they haven't responded.

I'm assuming no matter which 'enhanced' version of the WowBB software I have chosen or will chose in the future, this will be an issue.   This problem renders my site useless.  The board is research-heavy and relies on a ac hives to provide often critical medical and other information, a good search is imperative.

Can anybody tell me what I should tell my server to fix this issue?

Snz

Hi Snooze,

The issue of rebuilding an index lies in server power as much as server config. If a server has a constant load of above 4 or 5 even if it has dual processors and a lot of memory you can bind it up during a search index rebuild. When the load goes to 15 or 20 then it gets too slow and will time out, maybe even temporarily shut down MySQL.

It is easier to move the extremely large search index with SSH I have found than to attempt rebuilding it. I have never had a problem rebuilding an index on the latest Data 1 servers.

So I can say from experience, it is more the server than the board.

How big is your posts_text table?

Thanks for the reply, it is REALLY appreciated.

The table size is 189651K.

The search index was already deleted because of an error, so moving it is no longer an issue, but I'll remember that.

That is pretty big, but it still should only be a matter of the time it takes. One that big will take about an hour and a half on a good server.

I don't know what to tell you, I don't work for Wow any more and you don't have hosting with us.

I have been known to go to drastic measures for the customers here even if it means staying up till 3am and transferring a questionable database to one of my local servers here at home where load is never an issue and dissecting it till it works.

I can give you a little guidance and a little hope but I hope you understand that I can't work on it unless you are a customer.

I feel a little bad for leaving everyone behind but "I had to do what I had to do", I have a mild amount of sanity to uphold.

I can vouch for that! Jim did an all-nighter with my forum last month, for which words alone can't convey how much I appreciate it. :) As far as I remember, my search index was 1.2gbs and took a looong time to backup.

It's worth bearing all that in mind if we have some small problems §issie (btw how do you do that § letter?). I've learned from other forums that some members (not all) are all praise when things are going well, but they can get very cranky when there is a problem or bug. We need to remember that the admins/owners etc. are real people with real lives and families and can only do so much in a day. If something goes wrong they need space to fix it in their own time without us on their backs all the time.

If we all remember that, there should be no reason for unpleasantness during the problem times.
