I'm wondering if it's possible to edit a members IP addresses, ie delete some of them. The reason I ask is because I will probably have to ban a member soon but he shares an IP address with some other members. They are all real members and not just one with several memberships. That's why IP banning makes me nervous, one example is a good member who occassionally shares IP's with about 50 other members. Can the IP be edited in PHP My Admin? If so, I can't see the field for it.

The IP bans are actually held in the config.php file. You can edit them in admin panel/advanced/bans and filters

Thanks Jim. What I meant was can I edit out an individual IP address from a members list of addresses (the list that comes up when you click the IP button beside a post)? That way I won't accidentally ban several members with the same address.

Hi Steve, If you get a long list of IP numbers, possibly listing several users, it almost certainly means that they are on a dynamic IP address. That means they are assigned a different IP address by their ISP each time they log on to the internet. Most ISPs in the UK work that way for home users. The ISP has a block of IP numbers which are assigned and re-assigned to users as they log on and off. Users normally need a business connection, or have to pay extra, to get a fixed IP address for their sole use. It's pointless to ban an IP address which is within an ISPs list of dynamic numbers. That user won't be on that address next time they log on -- but some other user on the same ISP might be! It's better to delete the member, and ban their email address to prevent them re-registering. regards, Martin.

Thanks Martin. I think it's just incredible that a pile of people from different areas can end up on the same forum sharing overlapping IP's.

it's going to get worse, the world is at the end of it's IP's. The protocol the entire internet runs on (IPv4) is over 20 years old, we will have to migrate to IPv6 in order to continue expanding.

Can they not just add more numbers at the end Jim, like the telephone companies do when all the phone numbers get used up? What else will IPv6 do?
