Could someone tell me the reason for having this facility made available to members of forums. I cannot for the life of me think why a registered member of a forum would want to hide his/her presence as this arouses all kinds of suspicions of his /her motives when other members see that someone is skulking about. It also seems a bit useless when the admin can see straight away who the member is. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in someones motives does it?

Hi Bob, I set myself as invisible on all the forums I join. I regard it as an invasion of privacy for the whole world to know whether and when I am at home sitting at my computer. In fact on my own board I have removed the list of "Who's Online" entirely, and the online indicators below the user names, as I think it's just as much an invasion of every one else's privacy. I have left the "Who Visited Today" feature for those who have not set themselves invisible. See http://www.templot.com/forum Don't expect me to join any board where my online status can't be hidden from public view. But I have no problem with the Admin knowing when I'm online. regards, Martin.

I am an active member on a couple of forums where I have set my status to invisible. personally, I dont think its anyone elses business when Im online. I honestly dont see what the big deal is of being invisible. If a member chooses to be invisible, isnt it their right to do so? as long as theyre not causing problems for people (trolling on the forums and in PM's, etc.) why should it bother anyone?

WHY... cuz i dont want everyone to know how much im on there... now my secret is out.. Di if you tell i will have to

Seriously--No kidding: My boards are based on fishing, and for 10 years my boss was a fishermen, and a member of my boards. We worked for a very large company, and he was the supervisor of the Tool and Die Shop. I ran the T&D shop on third shift. It was VERY important that I log on invisable so that HE didn't know that I was playing on the computer when I was supposed to be working. Believe me--there are millions of people who have similier reasons for being invisable. Obviously, any large company running a network can tell exactly where and when their employees go on the Internet. Being able to surf "Invisable" just keeps from giving them a reason to start looking. People who use the invisable feature sometimes have very good reasons.

I agree with bou on this, ie I can see the pros and cons. I just leave the option available on my board simply because it's there. The number of people who choose to appear invisible is so small (170 members, 175 guests, 5 invisible in the last 60 minutes) that it's just not worth even thinking about for me.

Obviously, any large company running a network can tell exactly where and when their employees go on the Internet. Being able to surf "Invisable" just keeps from giving them a reason to start looking. Gotta say here - you running "invisible" on a site - does not mean you are that way to your network admin. I'm the lucky one who is called on to monitor employees use and I can tell where any employee is - at the exact site and for how long - at any moment asked. Being invisible on a site does not hide you from us Network Nazis. Many an employee has rued the day they believed that myth. I run invisible for a multitude of reasons. Main one is what I am doing is my own business - at home. At the office there is a different set of rules in play. The loss of productivity due to the internet is astounding. JMHO

JMHO LOL I am off today - I can do what I want cuz I be the NetNazi - but I figure they pay me to work - not surf the net, ya know? I gotta earn it or I feel like I have done someone wrong. At the end of the day I want to be able to say I did my best. I'm a very good employee - that's why when they outsourced my helpdesk job recently - they kept me and now I get to play in a lot of IT stuff. I'm stoked cuz I love learning it.

I've been a tool and die maker for 25 years, until April. The wonderful company that I worked for started buying all of their tooling from China, and had a "workforce reduction". I got a nice severance package, and am now going back to college at the ripe old age of 49. I freakin love it. Did I mention that when I was laid off, the very first thing that I did was to register the domain XXXXtalk.com??? I hope that Ultra is ready for another board.

wingnutter wrote: Sounds like you are happy in your work Stoney. Right now it's very stressful but in general - yes - I love my job. It's one of a few things that I am proud of because my education is not in IT and I have learned so much and this is a new open door to go through to learn a lot more. I love our server rooms and all those lovely blades and servers and humming machines. I'm such a dork!
