Members have been asking if it is possible to have a popup for new PM's as they say it is easy to miss them by the indicator in the side panel. I realise they can have an e-mail sent on a new PM.

Hi Bob,

A popup is difficult, but you can easily have scrolling red text (for your members reading the forum in English):

Go to Admin > Advanced tab. In the menu on the left select Language Editor.

It's a long list, but fortunately the settings to change are near the top.

In the box for new_messages: copy and paste this to replace what's there:

<img border="0" src="/forum/images/pm_indicator.gif" width="10" height="10"><FONT COLOR="RED">&nbsp;You have <B>$num_messages</B> new messages &nbsp;<MARQUEE WIDTH="35" SCROLLAMOUNT="1">click</MARQUEE>&nbsp;</FONT><img border="0" src="/forum/images/pm_indicator.gif" width="10" height="10">

In the box for one_new_message: copy and paste this to replace what's there:

<img border="0" src="/forum/images/pm_indicator.gif" width="10" height="10"><FONT COLOR="RED">&nbsp;You have <B>1</B> new message &nbsp;<MARQUEE WIDTH="35" SCROLLAMOUNT="1">click</MARQUEE>&nbsp;</FONT><img border="0" src="/forum/images/pm_indicator.gif" width="10" height="10">

regards,

Martin.

There are lots of ways to do it Bob, but the scrolling text is hard to beat for being noticed.

That works fine and now I'm wondering if we can add one of the Windows ding dong sounds to draw peoples attention to it as an extra.

Hi Bob,

Add this to the code in the boxes which I gave you previously.

<BGSOUND SRC="http://www.templot.com/odds/bong.wav" LOOP="2">

It works only in IE. Try it -- some of your members will soon be asking to have it removed! It would be better if Jim implemented something like this as a user preference.

For other browsers, a better solution might be to embed a small auto-start Flash file. I will see what I can do.

regards,

Martin.

I have put the sound in ok Martin and that works ok but as you say only for IE. The popup is great but only novel the first time, after that it takes too long. The picture or message by itself would be more like the old system we had and preferable I think.

Hi Bob,

You don't have to wait for it to finish! As soon as you click the link above it to read your messages, the video stops.

But it was only a bit of fun. :)

You can easily put in any picture. A picture of a bright red TPO van might be appropriate.

Martin.

Just noticed Martin that you bong.wav you gave me for the PM sound has changed from an engine noise to a squeeky voice.  Could we have our engine noise back please. :whatever: :)

I would also like the code for the popup, the one with the crane and the "PM Arriving" message if you still have it as I think I would like to try it out after all. They just might like it.

I use this it is easy, pleasing to the eye, and QUITE noticable.

Hi Bob,

Add:

<br><img src="http://wowultra.com/forum/attachment.php?id=255">

Assuming Jim doesn't mind. :)

Ideally right-click on it, save it (in GIF format), upload it to your hosting and replace the URL above with the uploaded file's URL.

Martin.

Does that go in the same two panels as the sound Martin. That 'voice' is getting on my nerves now, what happened to the train noise?

Engine noise? :? It was supposed to be the clash of cymbals. I haven't changed it. :?

I posted it yesterday in a different topic. Licensed members only because of the load on my server: http://wowultra.com/forum/forum23/940.html

It was a while ago. I do not think there was any code involved. I think I uploaded the GIF in place of the one that came with the forums.

Clash of symbols it may have been Martin but to our ears it sounded like a train chuffing. Is there any way you can hear it yourself?

This is the one we use Robert.  Jim replaced the twirling one that comes with Ultra for us,  as we used this one before and the members liked it better.

You are welcome to use it if you like.
