If I backup from the Admin panel with gzip ticked then the database is 5MB+ if I untick the compression box then the backup is instant with 0 bytes. It would appear that I can't make an uncompressed backup of the database. Last edited on Sat Sep 20th, 2008 07:25 pm by Robert |

Robert you are automatically backed up daily, weekly and monthly. If you need a backup it would best be done with phpMyAdmin. This is a bug though and depends on server settings. It is a bad routine and is too dependent upon server settings in my opinion. I already have pushed Ultra 1.17 back to the end of October so I really don't want to add anything else unless it's a real security issue.

That's how I was able to restore partial tables was from automatic backups on the server. Have you used phpMyAdmin? Even when the backup does work in admin panel IT DOESN'T BACK UP THE ENTIRE DATABASE though it does get important tables. phpMyAdmin gets it all most of the time.

Where is phpMyAdmin to be found. I thought it would be in the cpanel but it isn't.

It should be there Robert, small text that you might have to look closely for.

In the resulting page, go to the right frame and click the "export" tab. All the tables are pre highlighted and all the check boxes have been set up for a full export EXCEPT you have to scroll to the bottom left (of the right frame) and check the box beside "save file as" then click the go button. This will give you a full backup of all tables including search index and sessions to your computer. Or you could just say "Jim, can I have a copy of last night's backup the server did automatically?" Jim

Or you could just say "Jim, can I have a copy of last night's backup the server did automatically?" Now that sounds good to me LOL

That was easy enough. One last question. You made no mention of selecting a database to Export so I preume the right one is chosen automatically. I see there are several to choose from in the left hand panel and it does say 'Select a database'.

? You should only have 2 databases, and we can delete one. One was called convert, I used it for testing. ultra is the database you are using for the forum. All the stuff you see in the left pane are tables within the database. I'll delete the extra for you to cut confusion-

I see you have done that Jim, thanks. One thing though, the backup I did yesterday was 68.8 MB so I did another one this morning and that was only 53.9 MB. Is this because of the database you have deleted? The ones in the panel now are : information_schema and yourmode_ultra, so presumably these two cover everything I would need if it ever came to me having to restore the database.

Hmmm it shouldn't show you information_schema at the customer level, ignore that one. The sessions table swings high and low depending on the time of day. Server is in EST so it cleans sessions out at midnight plus a second (the first user that accesses the DB after that time). At 11:59PM EST the database will be larger.

So if I ignore that one Jim, which is the best page to choose yourmode_ultra on, the phpMyAdmin or the Export page, where you choose which database you want to Export. Choosing yourmode3_ultra in phpMyAdmin does send me to a different page though, a page with a long list of files each with an unticked box next to it with Export as one of the choices at the top of the page. I know I seem to be making a complicated issue out of what is a very simple task but when I see different results for choosing the same thing I like to know which is the best way to go.

Since your database name is sensitive (it isn't what you posted in the post above) and this is a public area I'll give you specifics in PM.
