I was offline all day as I was working outdoors, but ome of my moderators posted this;

"From about 11:57 til 15:27 today the site was unavailable - it was not just this site but the wow Ultra site as well."

I didn't see any posts here about this so I'm wondering if it was just something at his end.

Jim mentioned that people in England had a hard time accessing sites for a couple of hours today.

I know Mag emailed and asked the same thing but we didnt have any problems at all today

Hmm that is strange Steve.  Myself and another coordinator in the UK couldn't access our site but it wasn't a problem for others.  I came to the conclusion it was something this side of the pond as we are both with the same ISP, but then noticed that another UK member could get in ok.  Most weird!

Oops looks like I was posting at the same time as Di.

Yes I though it must have been something local as none of the US members had problems either here or at my forum, unless I missed it. Everything is fine at the moment.

Servers were up, looks like there might have been a DNS snafu.

snafu --> hiccup, fart

DNS -->  Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an internet service that translates domain names  into Ip addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name http://www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.

The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.

So basically the domain name server farted....;)

When a server is having problems it exhibits symptoms just like when people are getting sick. It will have a higher load than it has been averaging, disks will become unusually full quickly, memory usage will climb rapidly.... our servers exhibited none of these symptoms.

It looks like it was bottle necking at the name level which doesn't mean it wasn't Data 1's problem but meant it wasn't on the hosting servers. The sites hosted on our server where the name was held elsewhere did still work through most of the weirdness.

It might not have been the name source either, it could have been one of about 20 routers in between the names and our servers. No telling really.

I am sorry for the problems.

Jim
