Mana:
I have a member who joined only a few days ago with only 2 posts and this member already has 4 bars of mana or respect as I labeled it.  I don't understand how this could have happened.  A moderator on the site said that this person had the respect within a day of this person signing on.  My moderator said that at that the time there was not that many people who had got on.

Does anyone know how this could have happened and can anyone explain how a person moves up in respect/mana?

Thanks,

Wild Willy

I wish I could explain that. Mana is mysterious, and it is supposed to work when there are a large amount of participants. I spent years defending Mana and it's theory. Mana will be completely replaced in the next major release with a user ranking system, a simpler non interactive one. I don't think anyone will miss it.

This unfortunately has remained the same for version 1.15. To change it go to admin panel/advanced tab/ click on the language editor on the left.

Hit ctrl/f on your keyboard and type "mana" in there. It will take you to the place to change that. Enter the new word for mana on the right in the box, scroll down 347 miles to eventually find the the save button....click it.

Remember it is the FIRST instance of mana you find. It will say user_mana: on the left.

My members never used "mana". So, I changed the name to "Brownie Points".:q

It was a big hit with them after that.

I actually have no idea how mana came about. I know that it is a semi dis respectful mis-spelling of a biblical term "manna". Google manna and find plenty about it.

It will be completely replaced in future versions with a fun easy to understand rating system.

I just read your post and laughed. Everyone on my forum couldnt quite understand the point of mana either.

I hope you dont mind, but I used your brownie points name. They seem to like it now.... Thanks for the laugh and idea buster...:)

you can call it whatever you want to but the reality is that no one, and I mean no one understands the formula on how it is calculated. it is not as simple as respect on some boards where you give it to some one and they get 1 respect point etc.
It is a strange formula based on complicated formulas that only noble peace prize winners could comprehend.

I will happily turn it OFF for now and wait and see what cool stuff Jim comes up with to replace it completely!

actually james i think i understand how its calculated but i know what you mean.

the bottom line is mana is the worst ranking system i have ever seen by far simply because it does not work.

vbull has a pretty decent one called "reps" for reputation, it can go from red bars for negative to green for positive. it can be abused but only by members who have built up a lot by being around for a long long time. plus the admin can turn anyone red or neutral who is abusing there high green rank to turn others red.

its the best i have seen so far.

mana is something i'm sure aycan came up with on his own. its really a straight forward equation albeit a complex sounding one when trying to explain it.

it should have been sh!t canned a long time ago but i think aycan's ego couldn't let him.

i think a good ranking system really gets people involved, i've seen it happen, so its an important selling point for the software.

replacing it in the next version would go long way to making people feel like the version is a grand slam imo.

oh BTW with the vbull ranks you can add rep according to what post you liked by that user and leave a comment that they can read from there control panel,  that is really nice because you get feedback(either pos or neg) and know what posts elicited reactions from other members.

Mana is being replaced as I have said before. I'm taking suggestions for the math, but one thing is carved in stone.... the current system is not being used by most and needs to be replaced.

oh i realize you are going to replace it, i was just echoing the sentiment.

and i'm not saying to knockoff Vbull's way, just to mention its a pretty decent way of doing it.

as for the math involved, i dunno.

maybe something like ten points to get one bar, each post above a set number of posts, like say 20 is worth one point, so to get one bar you need to make 30 initial posts.
then on top of that a member can give you good rep which boosts you further according to have much good rep they have, and they can also give you bad rep to knock you down, again according to how much rep power they have. so that way it isn't dependent on just making posts because a post whore would get knocked down, but on the other hand a new member doesn't have to wait for others to give them rep to get some, all they have to do is make quality posts.

i wouldn't have a clue on how to figure the equations.

I like this feature also. I like when i get respect on a board and then can go see why they liked it. That is a pretty cool feature I have to agree.

Personally I don't like replacing mana with brownies points. I've thought about it before and never been sure what to rename it, but I'll be changing it when we move, or before. I might run a poll.

An idea I've had is to make it based on the amount of posts, time registered and mana respectively. So someone with high mana but only 4 posts and registered for a week wouldn't get a high overall rating.

Hi Mat. How can you affect the mana as it seems to have a mind of it's own? I remember trying to meddle with it in the Control Panel but it reverted back after a few minutes.

It would require changing the formula.

The only good thing about Mana is that it generates a lot of debates on the forums. When people get bored they start a new mana thread. Four and a half years of mana and I still haven't the faintest idea of how it works and I wouldn't even dare pretend I did for fear I might be asked about it.
