This warning has just started appearing above the logo while I am in the Admin Panel but only in the General settings page.

Warning: chdir() [function.chdir]: No such file or directory (errno 2) in /home/yourmode/public_html/util.php on line 23

You must have removed a theme directory or a language directory.

Looks like you made a typo somewhere Bob.

/yourmode/ should surely be /yourmodelrailway/  ?

Martin.

Martin, the directory I put him in on my server could have been /alienbeerbash/ if I wanted, it doesn't matter to apache. There are no typos and no bugs, he has deleted a directory the script calls on either in the languages directory or the themes directory.

Hi Jim,

Ok. Thanks for that. We will have to wait for Bob's reply, it is currently 4am in Spain.

Martin.

You are quite right Jim I have recently deleted some themes from the themes directory. Obviously I have not done it correctly. I have kept those which I deleted so will put them back and see what happens.

OK I have put the themes back and the warning has gone. Right on the button again Jim.

So now how do I restrict the members choices in their preferences to only those themes that I want them to use?

Hi Bob,

If it's any consolation, I'm seeing the same error message after deleting unwanted theme folders.

Which is strange, because I have removed unwanted themes that way before without errors.

Over to Jim. But we may have to wait a while -- it's currently 5am in Ohio. :)

Martin.

You can only force one theme at a time on them Robert. In the ADMIN PANEL main page;

Theme:
Changes the appearance of the board. If a user does not choose another theme, this will be default for him/her.

Or ;

Override User Theme:
If turned on the general board theme becomes the theme that all members see, they no longer can select a theme in their preferences.

Hi Steve,

What we are trying to do is allow members to choose a theme, but remove unwanted themes from the list of themes available.

There must be a way to try a new theme for your board, and then remove it again if you decide that you don't want it to be used.

regards,

Martin.

That's exactly it Martin, just what I want to do. I'm sure there must be a way of removing the themes you don't want without the error message coming up.

A bit of trial and error reveals that the Beige and Ultra themes require the Shades theme to be also present in the themes folder, to avoid getting this error.

That explains why I haven't seen it before -- I was using Shades.

Over to Jim.

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Does that mean that I can take the Sea and Aiblue themes out and not get the error? That would be a start.

Bob

Yes. You can remove any other theme folders which you don't want, but you must leave the shades folder until Jim has fixed this.

The error is benign. Members don't see it, and it doesn't affect Admin functions.

Jim, the error is line 394 in admin.php :

        "gen_shade"             => dir_list("themes/shades", SHADE_OF_SHADES, "gen_shade", 2),

regards,

Martin.

Martin, there is no error it was designed that way by me. And yes it is for the shades of shades list, a routine also designed by me. If it really bothers you that much comment out the line using two front slashes prior.

Why not just let them use shades? Being it uses no images it is the fastest loading of any theme and is perfect for those few still using dial up. Seems like you are determined to remove one of the more thoughtful features.

Remember also if you don't use user theme override AND remove theme folders AND the user has previously selected that theme they will not be able to access the board.

Hi Jim,

I agree. I prefer Shades and use it exclusively for my board in two font sizes -- always have done from WowBB. It's fast and it looks good. I'm not determined to remove it at all.

But I'm developing a front page for Bob, and he wants to use Ultra and Beige only. The reason is that in those themes each post is in a separate table. That means that members can post wide images without forcing the whole page wider, which causes much grief to members still on narrow screens.

I've solved that problem on my board by div-ing out the text to a fixed 750px width, but editing the template to do that isn't within everyone's means.

I didn't know until now that you must include the shades folder. It means that if you give users a choice of themes, it must include Shades. That looks like a bug to me -- Bob's wish to offer his members Ultra and Beige only seems a reasonable requirement. The easiest solution is just to live with the error message, as it only appears in Admin.

Remember also if you don't use user theme override AND remove theme folders AND the user has previously selected that theme they will not be able to access the board.Yes, I wondered about that. It sure makes it difficult to try out a new theme, and then decide later that you don't want it. :?

It looks like the intention is to force users to use a single theme. But ideally you need two themes -- one with large fonts for older eyes and desktop screens, and one with smaller fonts for young eyes and laptops.

Have more than two themes and it gets difficult to provide user support, with everyone seeing something different.

regards,

Martin.

Robert, just as an aside to the error message, I just changed over to Shades in the YMR forum & put a larger picture into my layout thread & it seems OK in not having to scroll.

Hi there Sol

It seems that all three of those themes have this characteristic so we don't have a problem now.

By the way have you seen this that Martin and I are working on. Actually he is doing the work while I keep pestering him. :) You will have to register but it's only a test forum.
