For whatever reason moving to Ultra from WoW.

The transfer is not completed, but for those thinking of a move, this is my experience to date.

Not a large board by any means, but I did want to preserve the database listing of members and postings, and keep the domain name.

I contacted Jim via PM on 15 November (Thursday) and asked him to lay out what was required to transfer my WoW account to Ultra, too include the free WoW domain name, as my WoW board was hosted on their server. Most likely the same setup used by many.

I knew the answer for the most part, as I have been monitoring this board for several months. I was just not sure on how much hands on action was required from me.

None required in my case, as Jim does all the work. I had to give him access to my WoW board. I had not modified my board except the header, so pretty straight foreword.

I made my purchase on 15 Nov of the Ulta software and also server space on Data 1 Systems.  Within an hour I had confirmation on both.

I went with Data 1 even though I have space on two other servers for other sites I run.  I wanted to keep Ultra and Data 1 married in case of future problems. I find thats the best route when dealing with databases, as I'm not an expert in that area, too include server problems with such and have no desire to learn.

On 15 November I received a GoDaddy request to become the new registrar of record.  I sent the email to Jim and he took care of the request.

Now the hangup, WoW did not act on their end until 19 Nov (Monday).  They had received a couple of emails requesting action from Jim prior to that date.  Not surprising, as its not something that would  likely get done  at WoW, going into a weekend.  Not really a dig at WoW, thats just how they are setup on such matters.

On 19 Nov (Monday) I received the following at 16:09 EST:

WowBB received notification on Monday, Nov 19, 2007 that you have requested a transfer to GoDaddy.com.

If we do not hear from you by Saturday, Nov 24, 2007, the transfer will proceed.

A built in delay by GoDaddy after WoW completed its required actions.

If it was not for the domain name transfer, almost no wait on data transfer, but a domain name transfer will delay things, as you see in my case.

Anyway, I don't know when Jim sleeps, but it seems that every time I PM I receive an answer within one hour.  He has also been very proactive in keeping me informed.

I will do a followup and let you know how the transfer of data went, but I don't expect any problems based on past postings.

with our 12 week old baby, Jim hardly finds time to sleep (Jacen is definitely a daddy's boy ;))

Update.

GoDaddy completed the domain name transfer to the new server on Sunday.

Up and running on the new server and ULTRA board without lose of data.

Registered shooters will need to do a one time log-in as cookies have changed.

Other than the domain name transfer that requires a bit of patience, a smooth transfer.
