I know a few people with large sites and forums (various types) who get time-outs when uploading by FTP, including with Frontpage. I've had this myself for a long time. I think the timeout is cause because of the long time taken in browsing the files. I even tried Cute FTP and others without success.
Last week someone told me to try Filezilla. It's free and it works! No more problems with ftp. You can get it free here;

Hi Wing, I used FZ for a while and it started inverting file names on me, It once mixed up the upper right and upper left corner images in a customers Wow board. Looked really strange.

Anyhow I settled on Winscp : http://winscp.net/download/winscp407setup.exe

which lets you connect SFTP (same security as SSH), regular FTP, and you can even open up a putty session if you need more power. If it does time out it reconnects and resumes. It also lets you open files on the server and edit them. It's real geeky but it's all I use now.

I haven't used FZ for over a year now, if it did have a bug I'm sure it is cured by now. I'll try it again!

Putty is the most popular program for connecting to servers using SSH (Secure SHell). The program I spoke of above (WinSCP) can open a PUTTY session with one click but only if you have putty installed.

I have a section here on backing up your database and restoring it if needed using SSH. It is the only way you can manipulate large databases.

It's geeky.
