over the last few days i've been really into burt lancaster. i've seen many of his movies over the years and i've always liked him. but last week i saw a clip of "seven days in may" and it really caught my interest, its one of those movies i should have seen somewhere along the line but for whatever reason i just never did. so i finally got a copy of it and i really enjoyed it and his performance was outstanding. so i started to bone up on his career. i watched "seven days in may", "elmer gantry","the professionals", "the killers" which was his first movie, "the swimmer" and i just finished watching "the rainmaker" boy let me tell you the man was just an outstanding actor and IMO "the rainmaker and elmer gantry were two of the best films i have ever seen. these are two films that he just owns, but more than that they out simply great stories about life and humanity, the human condition. stories brilliantly written and realized that make you want to be a better person and convey that there is so much untapped power with in a person and how self perception can either dampen and even extinguish it or it can infuse it and multiple it and send one soaring to heights thought unreachable. you guys who have seen me around for quite awhile and see the seemly quirky posts i make may think i am a little off my rocker, and maybe i am. but for me, all my life, without ever really knowing it, i would much perfer to be a dillusional person who sees the world as it should be rather than it is. than to be a person who's more worried about fitting in, more worried about not sounding stupid thereby allowing themselves to remain ignorant and content rather that taking a chance and maybe finding something out. a person afraid that waves may offend and so approval will be lost, the membership card taken away, left with nothing but yourself. people like elmer gantry and bill starbuck make they're own reality and in doing so that reality becomes reality. those stories convey the truth about life, that we can make anything happen , that we can forge something out of nothing, that you take the hits, suck them up and set your sights on the bigger picture and if there is nothing left to see, you have to invent it, keep yourself believing...in something no matter what. they're spirit, with all its imperfections, is the spirit that makes the world go round.

I like some of Burts films, mostly the later stuff. Tough guys was a nice change for Burt and Kirk Douglas. As for Kirk, Spartacus would be my favourite.

It's been ages since I have seen the films you mentioned. If you have not seen the Kirk Douglas film "Lonely are the Brave" then you are missing a really wonderful film. It totally broke my heart but it had a profound impact on me that has stayed with me all these years...Eek. I am old. I saw it the year it came out. LOL

"Villains who twirl their mustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness." lose weight, gain weight, drive a hummer, buy another $300 pair of sunglasses, wave the flag, support more laws, blame your problems on foreigners and then make friends with them online, but in the end they can't be a man because they don't smoke the same cigarettes as you. have you ever looked around at all the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns as they did tricks for you? you say you never compromised with the mystery tramp, but do you realized he's not selling any alibis when you stare into the vacuum of his eyes? only you can know the truth.

a man against the machine. a man out of time. buck the system and it will crush you, buck it anyway. man and machine are necessary, but only by raging against it can a balance be struck. lets hope society never loses those with the courage to do it, god help us if we do. lonely are the brave, in deed lonely are they. thanks for the tip stoney.
